Are the Greens serious about legalising cannabis?
The Greens dropped their Cannabis legalisation bill just before everyone packed up to go camping for the Easter long weekend.
Woo 🤨
YES: We are now closer than ever to legal weed NATIONALLY.
Everyone has been patiently waiting…

They'll be doing consultation until the 9th of May. The Greens would need the governments support in order to get this to pass.
Let's take a look at the good, bad, ugly, and what's missing:
The Good:
Growing cannabis would be legal for personal use and for people licensed by the new Cannabis Australian National Agency: CANA (oh very clever Greens you are so young and hip and stuff). Up to 6 plants can be grown for personal use.
You'll be able to buy and consume cannabis products in licensed cannabis cafe's. No more ducking out to the back shed to smoke out of a dirty bong.
Oh yeah, it would legalise recreational sale and use of cannabis if it gets passed.
The Bad:
The Greens say they are using Canada for inspiration. Canada is a shit-show at the moment due to high (😉) excises on cannabis and a massive oversupply. The last time we heard from the Greens about legalising cannabis they were talking about an excise of between 20-30%.
The Ugly:
Advertising cannabis will see you fined about $500k and sent to jail for 6 months unless the ad is on or inside a place where cannabis is sold.
Electronic advertising of cannabis will see people jailed for up to 6 years. Not sure what the deal is there but we hope that was a typo.
What's missing?
The NSW Greens were promising personal use growing of up to 12 plants as well as growing co-ops.
The Parliamentary Budget Office analysis assumed CANA would be the sole wholesaler and price setter of cannabis to retailers. This doesn't seem to be in this bill, and that's probably a good thing.
What do we think?

It all feels a bit half-baked. The timing, the typos... We checked a couple of Greens MPs twitter feeds and it barely rated a mention. David Shoebridge didn't even get to go on breakfast TV!
We can't see this going much further for now. It feels like they've milked as many new memberships out of this as they can and are more excited about free Public Transport.
We hope we are wrong.

Dr. Lenny's Lab
Dr. Lenny is out sick this week. They'll hopefully be back to do a special segment on Thursday.
Medicinal Cannabis Miners
Medicinal cannabis patients working in mining are being treated very differently to people on pharmaceuticals. The ABC says miners at Fortescue in WA are being sent home for having small amounts of THC detected in their system. Some are even losing their jobs.
Decades of evidence-free zero-tolerance approaches to cannabis have created a mountain of company policies about cannabis use that will need to change to keep up with medicinal cannabis.
Fossil fuel companies are dinosaurs, but they also love money. Not having a workforce is a big impediment to making money. They won't want to take on too much risk with regards to medicinal cannabis, but if they find themselves without a workforce they might actually move pretty fast on this.

International Cannabis News
Germany might chicken out of legalising cannabis after concerns it might violate European law. They could adopt a legalisation 'trial' instead, similar what was done in Zurich. This might mean even more pain for Aussie producers keen on exporting to Germany.
Legal cannabis darling Thailand could disappoint everyone at their upcoming election. The opposition are opposed to cannabis and believe legalisation has been bad for Thailand.
In the US Chuck Schumer will speak on cannabis legalisation progress on 4/20 while the head of the department of Health and Human Services promises everyone they are still working on legalising cannabis but it's really hard (poor guy).
