The Greenfields Get Smarter About the Cannabis Industry

Good morning. Welcome to The Greenfields. It makes you smarter about the cannabis business every time you read it.

What’ve we got for you today?

  • German cannabis plan gets A+ from EU

  • UN's 1961 cannabis virginity pledge

Cannabis Warehouse

Chemist Warehouse will soon distribute medicinal cannabis products. They’ve joined a Joint (😉) Venture (JV) with Wellnex Life (ASX:WNX) and OneLife Botanicals.

The plan is to launch five products across different formats (e.g. dried flower, oils, etc…) by the end of Financial Year 2023. The products will be developed by OneLife and sold through Chemist Warehouse network. Presumably online and instore.

The JV is also working on a new telehealth application to onboard medicinal cannabis patients. This will allow them to connect patients to MC prescribing doctors.

We are going to guess the business model will be similar to Montu. Montu connects patients to prescribing doctors through Alternaleaf. They then lock you in to buying through their network of pharmacies. Montu takes a little cut in between.

There’s potentially some upside for patients. Chemist Warehouse’s network of pharmacies is very large and the second most common complaint about medicinal cannabis in Australia is with delivery. The first most common complaint is price, but we don't expect the prices to be substantially cheaper.

German cannabis plan gets an A+ from the EU

Germany has finally turned in their cannabis homework to the EU.

And they got an A+!

The EU has told them they can go ahead with cannabis legalisation, with a few minor changes that they didn’t reveal.

The German plan allows:

  • Adults to buy and posses 20-30 grams of cannabis from cannabis stores and pharmacies

  • Growing up to three plants

  • The suspension of ongoing criminal proceedings related to cannabis

Little Green Pharma (ASX:LGP), CannGroup (ASX:CAN), and Australian Natural Therapies Group are some of the Australian cannabis cannabis producers who have partnerships to supply German businesses.

UN’s 1961 Cannabis Virginity Pledge

Meanwhile the United Nations has reminded some of its members they signed the equivalent of a cannabis virginity pledge way back in 1961.

In what we are now aware was a really dumb idea, the UN 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs had signatories (UN members that signed the convention) agree to cannabis prohibition. This was the first time that cannabis became an internationally controlled drug.

The convention prohibits anything more than medicinal and scientific use of cannabis.

What’s really interesting is the UN calls out the use of state-based legalisation as a way to circumvent the obligations of federal governments that signed the convention. Which is how adult use legalisation is happening in the US.

Australia is a signatory and the UNs little tantrum might impact state-based legalisation efforts.

Photos of People (or cats) Surrounded by Cannabis

This weeks Photos of People (or cats) Surrounded by Cannabis is dedicated to cannabis researcher Raphael Mechoulam who recently passed away.

Mechoulam was the first to isolate and synthesize THC and is known as the "father of cannabis research". Good on you Raphael.

If you have a great Photos of People (or cats) Surrounded by Cannabis share it with us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram.

TravaHealth tells customers it’s their problem

TravaHealth appears to be asking its customers to assume liability for their medicinal cannabis once it’s in the mail.

A reddit user has said they were directed to a website asking them not to hold TravaHealth responsible for any medicine that doesn’t arrive.

This is a lot to ask of medicinal cannabis patients. They could be out of pocket several hundred dollars per order.

In Australia, products missing or damaged in transit are the responsibility of the seller. Sellers are responsible for giving buyers a refund or resolving any issues with Australia Post.

We’ve reached out to TravaHealth to confirm but have not heard anything yet.
